In 1994 FC&L invested in a major forest operation, Floryl,
in Northestern Brazil, which is run by its Brazilian subsidiaries. Presently
the property consists of a pine plantation, biological reserves, and an area destined for reforestation and agricultural development.
For the first 10 years the company has mainly maintained the
forest, and established a self-sustainable economy by producing debarked poles for export out of the wood from the thinning
process. Since 2004 the harvest of the pine plantation has started, and
the timber is sold as standing timber, logs, charcoal and firewood. The
company is using its experience from its poles production and its machinery, to set up a new poles production in southern
Brazil.
Floryl is also an environmental project. The
plantation has through 25 years absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere, reducing the amount of greenhouse gasses, and when the timber
is used for energy, it provides CO2 neutral energy. For 10 years a powerplant fueled by waste wood, has produced CO2 neutral
energy. Furthermore the huge biological reserves, covering 20% of the
total area, provide refuge for numerous birds and animals. Brazilian universities and environmental associations have conducted
scientific research for many years in the property. Floryl has established
a center, providing environmental education for students and teachers in the area.
